About the castle
Since the 18th century, the castle has been home to the County Governor of Örebro. But one thing you may not know is that the castle for the very youngest is also the Gomorron Sun Castle itself. In fact, the Little Ghost Laban also lives here.
No one really knows how old the castle is. Probably the oldest part of the castle is a medieval stone house, which later grows with a defense tower over 30 meters high. The tower, in turn, is surrounded by a seven meter high and three meter thick ring wall.
However, we know one other thing for sure. In the middle of the 14th century, a larger castle was added, probably built by King Magnus Eriksson. The castle is then called Örebrohus and consists of three residential wings in three floors placed around the old tower.
No, Örebro Castle is not actually a museum. It's a living destination where you can discover new events and exhibitions all year round. But of course, it's also a place full of exciting stories of a bygone era, ready for you to enjoy!
The historic parts of the castle are run by Örebrokompaniet, which ensures that exciting things happen there all year round. Large parts of the castle are also offices and the home of our County Governor.
Do you feel like visiting a museum when you discover the castle? Then make sure to visit one of the castle's tenants - Örebro County Museum.
You are very welcome to come and have a look around!
Accessibility
The castle elevator is located in the southwest tower, in the public entrance. The elevator takes you to three floors: Floor 1, where the Castle Shop is located and where you also pay your entrance fee. Floor 2 where Örebro County Museum has its exhibitions. Floor 3 with the Church Hall, the State Hall and the County Hall. Other public parts of the castle are reached via stairs.
There are two parking spaces for disabled people on Kansligatan, about 50 meters from the public entrance of the castle.
Örebro Castle is 700 years old and is not at all adapted for stroller traffic. It is simply too crowded both here and there. But you can park your stroller in the castle's stroller parking lot. You'll find it on the ground floor of the entrance tower, just to the right of the stairs as you enter.
Psst! Do you need to borrow a lock? Let us know in the Castle Shop.
The historical tour of the castle is sometimes conducted in sign language. Contact us for more information and booking.
The castle does not have its own equipment. If you need hearing amplification during a guided tour, we can hopefully borrow equipment. It is important that you contact us well in advance, preferably a few weeks before your visit.
There are hearing loops in the National Hall and the County Hall. This means that you can use a hearing loop when you attend a lecture, conference or other event in one of these halls.
