Eight years of witch trials cost nearly 300 women their lives. Here you meet the people. The children who testified. The men who judged. The women who died.
The exhibition Witches tells the story of the hundreds of women in 17th century Sweden who were accused of witchcraft. Here, the the frightening dark period is shown in a new way. A way that takes you close to history and close to those affected.
Constructed environments and a wealth of images and films bring to life the time when gossip became truths with horrific consequences. The exhibition depicts real events and lives. It tells the story of the accused and of those behind the gossip. About what is said and not said. About what happens next.
You also get to put faces to the names that were previously just that - names in a record or in a story. Many of those mentioned in the historical documents have here, with the help of AI, been shaped into personal portraits. And at once, history becomes even more vivid, even more moving.
The exhibition is created by artist Pompe Hedengren and set designer Erik Gullberg. They have previously worked together on the exhibitions Aquanauts: The Expedition and Power Plants - Crafts in Our Time.
The author of the text is Cecilia Düringer, a history teacher and author who hosts the popular podcast P3 Historia.
"The experience is so real and moving that it feels like being there and witnessing the tragedy that the state never took responsibility for."

"The visual world they have built is impressive"
Frida Lindström, Barometern
"It's like stepping into a movie, beautiful and evocative"
Mattias Berg, Swedish Radio
Join the castle guide on a walk through time and space. You will get a great introduction to the exhibition WITCHES and more knowledge about Örebro's own witch history.
Included in the entrance ticket, but with a limited number of seats.
The WITCHES exhibition itself is recommended from around 10 years old.
The Witch Challenge is a rather tricky and sometimes a bit scary children's activity. Perfect for slightly older children. The aim is to find answers and complete tasks to finally get the reward.
The children's tower with room for lots of fun and games, also has a witch theme. But it's guaranteed to be more cute than scary.
Want to buy a souvenir to take home? In the Castle Shop you will find both gadgets and toys that are in one way or another connected to the exhibition.
Of course, we also sell the brand new book Häxor : När Satans raseri swept over Sweden - by Cecilia Düringer and Pompe Hedengren.
