Sorrow, Forests, and Fairytales
Wonderland is all about the love between a daughter and her mom. When her beloved mom, Maureen, passed away from cancer in 2008, Kirsty fell into a deep depression. She retreated to her home in the English countryside and started spending more and more time in the nearby forests.
Out in the forest, Kirsty began creating fairytale worlds, with characters and scenes inspired by childhood stories. This was her way of processing endless grief and longing. She photographs her worlds and eventually decided to turn the images into a book, dedicated to Maureen Mitchell.
The Wonderland Book is an exclusive book featuring all 74 works from the Wonderland series, plus a number of 'behind the scenes' shots. It's printed on the highest quality paper and weighs about 4.5 kilograms.

A super successful large-scale exhibition
The photographs also form the basis of the exhibition *Wonderland*, which has enjoyed international success in recent years. Here, Kirsty Mitchell showcases her large-format works—several of which are over two meters in size. In Sweden, *Wonderland* has been on view at venues including Fotografiska in Stockholm and Läckö Castle.
The exhibition at Örebro Castle around 40 works of art. It consists primarily of images from the original series, but also includes some more recent works inspired by Kirsty’s next life challenge—when, shortly after the birth of her son, she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

She creates everything – from costumes to photos
Kirsty Mitchell comes from a background in fashion and costume design, which she naturally brings into her magnificent and incredibly detailed artworks. As a multi-talented artist, Mitchell creates all the spectacular costumes and props herself, by hand – and it can take months to get all the materials ready for just one scene.
Once everything's ready, she packs it all up and heads out into the forest with her team: her husband, a model, and a makeup artist. When they're in the perfect spot, they work together to build the set. It's often super colorful and always captivating!
Finally, Kirsty Mitchell gets behind the camera and captures it all: color and fantasy, dreams and reality. But also deep sorrow and longing.
Don't miss *Wonderland*. By Kirsty Mitchell. At Örebro Castle.
